Classification: Marsupial (mammal)
Endangered status: Least concern Habitat: Hilly, sandy, and grassy lands The Common Wombat has short legs and very strong limbs. It can grow up to four feet long, weigh up to 88 pounds, with a shoulder height of about 14 inches. It is light brown and has short whiskers on its snout. Even though its limbs are short it can run 25 mph. The Wombat is usually found living by itself instead of in a group. The Wombat is also nocturnal which means it sleeps during the day and is awake at night. It is an herbivore so it only eats grasses, herbs and roots. When it cannot find food, it may even go into a neighborhood and tear down someone’s fence to get to grass. The Wombat’s breeding season is in spring and summer. The female only has one young at a time, and its gestation period is only around 25 days. Most of the time it only breeds only once a year. There are many interesting things about the Wombat; one is that its scat is cubed! It is a marsupial, so it carries its young in a pouch. |
