The Australian Owlet has very large, brown eyes, pinkish brown legs and brown feathers if it is a female and grey feathers if it is male. They are barred meaning they have stripes on their feathers. Australian Owlets are usually ten to eleven inches (or twenty-five to twenty-eight cm) long and weighs 1 ¾-3 5/8 oz, or 50-100 g.
Australian Owlets live in families that include the mother, father and the chicks. The chicks remain with the parents for a few months until they are able to fly away. Australian Owlets are nocturnal and eat insects that fly as well as that are on the ground. Australian Owlets will build their nests in hollows in tree. Their breeding period is from August to December and their gestation period is around three days. They will usually lay three or four eggs. The eggs will be incubated for around twenty-six days by the female and male. Both of the parents will feed their chicks. They will fledge after about twenty-six days. The Australian Owlets has very small beak, but the beak can open into a very large mouths built for catching insects.These birds like to line their nests with leaves. They have catlike whiskers above their beak. |
