Classification: Fish
Endangered status: Critically endangered Habitat: Rivers, lakes and oceans The Smalltooth sawfish is a very unique animal in shape and size. It can weigh up to 770 pounds. Other sawfish can weigh twice as much as the Smalltooth sawfish. It can be as long as 15 ft. and there have been reports of some longer ones. It is thought to be like sharks, but it is more like the Guitarfish. This is because of its fins and body shape. It has smaller teeth than most other sawfish. The Smalltooth sawfish lives alone for the period before the mating season. The sawfish is diurnal preferring to be active during the day and sleep at night. The sawfish kills its prey by stunning it with its snout then grind the dead or stunned fish with their teeth and eat them. One of the special things about the sawfish is it has eggs but they hatch in their mother’s stomach before birth. The period in which the mother is pregnant is around 12 months. The Smalltooth sawfish baby is born with a membrane to protect the snout of the baby. The life span of a Smalltooth sawfish is unknown. They have up to 23 babies. Some interesting things about the Smalltooth sawfish are that every species of sawfish is endangered. They live in places like Australia but also live off the coast of the eastern states of the U.S.A. |
