The Tasmanian devil is nocturnal, meaning that sleeps in the day and is active and scavenging at night. When I mentioned scavenging I meant that the Tasmanian devil eats more carrion that fresh meat. The Tasmanian devil mostly eats small mammals, even other marsupials. It also will eat lizards, frogs, birds, some fruits, and crayfish. There lifespan is up to 8 years and it prefers to hunt singularly, not in a pack. The Tasmanian devils breeding season is March and April, and their gestation period is about 31 days. They first breed at two years of age and the number of cubs in a liter is 2-4. The common name for an immature Tasmanian devil is a cub. They only breed once a year. Some interesting facts about the Tasmanian devil are, It is Australia’s largest carnivorous marsupial. It has five toes in the front and four in the back. It is a marsupial meaning that it carries it’s young in a pouch. It is nocturnal preferring to scavenge at night, and last but not least it is an endangered species. |
